Hello and welcome to The Working Actor’s Journey!
Journeyman actor: a qualified, experienced, and reliable performer who has made a living consistently for decades, enjoys little to no fame, and in most cases, is part of the (very large) middle class of actors.
Let’s hear the stories of journeymen and journeywomen actors!
I started this show because great actors have changed my life. They made me a better actor and a better person, and I hope they can do that for you too.
What’s it all about?
This podcast will bring you in-depth conversations with actors that have been working professionally for decades.
- How did they get from A to B?
- How do they actually work on material?
- What creates longevity?
- What have they learned from a lifetime of acting?
We’ll hear from those who are further down the road.
In most cases, these aren’t the stories you’ve heard before, yet they are just as fascinating, inspiring, and useful—perhaps even more so, since so few people become “stars” and most actors I’ve talked to just want the opportunity to keep working with great people on fantastic material—and to earn a living in the process—and that’s what these actors have been doing.
This podcast connects listeners with amazing teachers, role models, and mentors. I want you to learn from those who have been doing this for decades—to see exactly how others approach the work, what decisions and resources have made the biggest impacts on their artistic lives, and to hear the struggles and successes from others in the business.
I want this to help people know what to do EARLIER in their career. How do great actors actually work? What do they actually do? Let’s find out!
Let’s hear about “where the rubber meets the road,” where theory turns into practice and real-world experience.
So whether you are an actor at the start of your career, fascinated by actors’s stories, or just enjoy long-form, in-depth interviews, I look forward to it becoming part of your journey!
I’m your host, Nathan Agin.
I grew up in small-town Massachusetts and then moved across the country to study theatre at the University of Southern California.
Then, I worked in Los Angeles, mainly doing 99-seat theatre. I’ve been fortunate to do a number of shows and readings that have been artistically fulfilling, and I’ve also done a Super Bowl commercial and played in a regional show in Seattle. I worked and took classes for many years with the Antaeus Company in Glendale.
Recently, I got back into theatre, even playing the lead in Shakespeare’s Richard III. I remembered how wonderful a community and family theatre can be, and it encouraged me to develop this project further. I’m also an audiobook narrator, which has been a fun way to utilize all the work I’ve done.
Why this podcast?
I have been so fortunate to connect, work with, and learn from so many wonderful actors over the years, and I want to do what I can to share their talent, gifts, and wisdom as widely as I can.
Of course, it’s impossible to unpack a person in only an hour or so.
The great tragedy of this show, if there is one, is that we can’t cover everything. Without fail, whenever we finish, no matter how great the conversation, I inevitably think of something else I would have loved to talk to them about. But that’s just how it goes.
Why I’m hosting this?
- I love learning about people
- I traveled for a number of years, meeting and learning about people all over the world, getting them to open up, and attempting to understand others
- I’m very, very curious
- I’m fascinated with how actors work
- I know many wonderful actors, so finding guests isn’t one of the problems for this show
So, I could either have waited for someone else to do this, or like many projects, just start it, and see how it goes—to see whether I enjoy it and whether others enjoy it!
